TIED TOGETHER:What is Super League Triathlon anyway?
Super League Malibu: Who to watch
The trip to Malibu is the athletes’ third straight weekend of racing, and with fatigue creeping into mistakes, it will cost them dearly. The event weekend also hosts the world’s largest fundraising triathlon, the star-studded Malibu Triathlon. who has already earned more than $16 million for Children’s Hospital Los Angeles. Past celebs who have competed in the Malibu Triathlon include Jennifer Lopez, Tom Cruise, Robin Williams and Matthew McConaughey. (And in case you missed it, we interviewed two celebs from this year’s race — ABC’s Karla Souza and Jimmy Tatro housekeeping – on how Karla convinced her co-worker to try Tri!)
But the real star power at the Super League Malibu lies in the exciting matchups of the best and fastest triathlon pros. The women’s race will be led by Georgia Taylor-Brown, the 2021 Super League champion, who claimed a win at last weekend’s race in Munich. She will face off against speedsters Beth Potter and Taylor Spivey. Olympian Summer 2020 Rappaport will also join the mix this time around and is probably feeling good after her podium finish at last weekend’s Czech World Cup – can she add to her podium count for the season in Malibu?
In the men’s Matt Hauser will be looking to repeat his win in Munich – the Australian is all in in his pursuit of the series title and it shows in his dominating performances. But it won’t be easy as Hauser has to hold off players like Jonny Brownlee, Hayden Wilde and Vasco Vilaca. But the weekend’s wildcard will be a name we don’t typically see in short-distance races: pro cyclist-turned-Ironman champion Cam Lassen. Will he be able to hold his own against the super-fast Super League squad?
Super League Malibu History and Format
The stunning shoreline of Zuma Beach provides an awe-inspiring backdrop for the world’s best athletes to go head-to-toe with an unpredictable sea swim and really change things up.
The Malibu race will use the Super League’s trademark Eliminator format, where athletes will be eliminated at the end of each event and at the end of each mini-race – after the swim, bike and finish. This goes over three rounds in which the athletes fight hard enough not to be eliminated but also manage their efforts against exhaustion.
- Stage 1 – Swim-Bike-Run (10-minute break)
- Stage 2 – (Top 15 finishers from Stage 1) Swim-Bike (10 minute break)
- Stage 3 – (Top 10 finishers of Stage 2) Swim Bike Run
