Jakob Chychrun trade details: Senators send three picks to Coyotes for defenseman

The Jakob Chychrun saga in Arizona has come to an end.

The Coyotes traded defensemen to the Senators for three draft picks on Wednesday, ending Chychrun’s seven-year tenure with the franchise.

Chychrun’s name has been in trade rumors for over two years since it broke out in the 2020-21 season. With Arizona under construction and Chychrun in an extremely team-friendly deal, he provided a top trade chip for Coyotes general manager Bill Armstrong.

Armstrong has finally made a move after failing to move Chychrun at last year’s trade close or during the 2022 off-season.

The 2016 first-round pick appeared in 36 games this season for the Coyotes before the team decided to retire him pending a trade. He had seven goals, 21 assists and 28 points while averaging a career best lap time of 23:16 on the ice. He also contributed 56 blocked shots and 43 hits.

Senator’s draft pick protection

The 2023 first-round pick is protected if it finishes in the top five. In that case, the Coyotes would get an unprotected first-round pick for 2024.

The 2024 second-round pick could become a top-10 protected 2024 first-round pick if Ottawa advances to the 2023 Eastern Conference Finals.

Jakob Chychrun contract details

The 24-year-old defenseman still has a six-year, $27.6 million deal he signed two years after that deal. He has a $4.6 million cap hit for the next two seasons. He may become an unrestricted free agent in 2025.

From the coming season, a modified trade ban clause will come into force. He can submit a list of 10 teams he cannot be traded with unless he waives the clause.
