Joe Burrow injury update: Bengals QB’s dad says he could be out ‘a few weeks’ following appendectomy

Joe Burrow remains absent from Bengals training camp as he recovers from surgery to remove his appendix and his father says he may be out for a little longer.

Jim Burrow told Dave Lapham on the In the Trenches podcast that the Bengals quarterback is “getting better every day,” but noted that hopefully he’ll be back on the field “in a couple of weeks.”

“There’s always danger and complications with surgery like this, so Joe just has to listen to his doctors and the trainers at the facility and take it easy,” said Jim Burrow. “He’s not one to take it easy, but he has to do it and it’s going to be best in the long run if he just makes sure he’s doing what he’s supposed to do.”

Joe Burrow injury update

Joe Burrow underwent the procedure on July 27 after reports that he had appendicitis, which causes the appendix to swell and often becomes infected. Jim Burrow said he had heard a lot from different doctors and would not answer directly if his son’s appendix had ruptured.

The procedure can be routine, as a study by the National Library of Medicine found nearly 10 percent of participants had their appendages removed, and some players have recovered quickly. Charlie Goldsmith of the Cincinnati Enquirer reported that Rams quarterback John Wolford had his appendix removed Aug. 6, was back at the facility Aug. 9, and returned to full training Aug. 19, a span of just 13 days.

But Jim Burrow said the operation was not trivial.

“No it’s actually a major operation unless it’s just routine so it set him back a long way but it seems to be getting better every day and hopefully he’ll be back on the field here in a couple of weeks.” said Jim Burrow.

In his Aug. 5 news conference, Bengals coach Zac Taylor said the team is “taking it day by day” with the quarterback, though he was recently spotted back in practice. However, he did not engage in the drills in the same way as the rest of the team.

“He’s definitely going to want to push his limits and when he’s feeling better, even if it’s not the normal time they’ve set for him,” Jim Burrow said. “He’ll want to get out of there but I know he’s worried about being healthy all season and know a setback here in the next few weeks would set him back for the season but I think he’s good .

“He’s getting better every day and he really likes being with his teammates so he spends as much time as possible up there at the facility.”
