Liverpool vs Everton result, highlights and analysis as Gakpo seals Reds victory in Merseyside derby

ANFIELD, LIVERPOOL — Liverpool ended a three-game winless run and inflicted Sean Dyche’s first defeat as Everton manager as they won 2-0 in the Merseyside derby.

Jurgen Klopp’s side shook off their recent poor form to dominate their local rivals, who impressed by beating Premier League leaders Anfield just last week.

They needed some luck to make it, as James Tarkowski hit the post just seconds ahead of Mohamed Salah by completing a first-half blitz counterattack.

However, the Reds offered good value for a win sealed by a second-half goal from Cody Gakpo – his first for the club since arriving from PSV Eindhoven in January.

Liverpool vs Everton, how it happened, highlights

FULL-TIME: Across Anfield and Liverpool, they claim a 2-0 win over rivals Everton thanks to goals from Mohamed Salah and Cody Gakpo. That looked like a return to form for the Reds while the visitors still have some work to do to get out of the relegation zone.

90 minutes: Four minutes to add.

87 minutes: An almighty kerfuffle on the touchline as Robertson kicks the ball away to stop Everton from taking a quick free-kick. Once the scrum eases, Liverpool’s Scottish defender gets a yellow card, as does Pickford.

82 minutes: Bajcetic grabs the ball from deep and drives forward with plenty of options to back it up on the counterattack.

He eventually picks Salah but Tarkowski brilliantly manages to slip in and block the shot.

77 minutes: Dyche now rolls the dice while Dwight McNeil and Andre Onana make way for Neal Maupay and Tom Davies.

Surely if Everton could score now Liverpool would start to get nervous.

69 minutes: Darwin Nunez leaves the field to be replaced by Diogo Jota, whose return from injury was met with a roar from the crowd at Anfield.

66 minutes: Coady cynically interrupts a brilliantly crafted counterattack involving Nunez and Bajcetic and goes into the book.

61 minutes: A change for Everton with Ellis Simms replaced by Demarai Gray.

57 minutes: Iwobi tries from 25 yards but he can’t find the space to generate power and Alisson easily collects him.

49 minutes: Goal! And Everton will have to pay for their wasted chance if they get cut open.

Robertson slices from the left before feeding Salah, who feeds Alexander-Arnold to set an unstoppable low cross that gives Gakpo a tap-in at the back post. This is his first goal for the club and what a time to achieve it.

48 minutes: The Toffees win a free-kick in a dangerous area down the left but it’s wasted when McNeil tops his delivery. Dyche will try desperately to make better use of such situations.

46th minute: Everton lets things restart.

HALFTIME: Nunez punches his left foot into the box but he’s bravely blocked and that’s the end of a half where Salah put Liverpool ahead.

42 minutes: Liverpool have clearly been buoyed by this breakthrough but to their credit Everton are holding on. Unless a one-goal lead for the hosts turns into two, their game plan won’t change all that much.

36 minutes: Goal! Liverpool leads through Salah!!!

It’s a chaotic passage of play that leads to goal, starting with Tarkowski hitting the far post with a superb header from a corner. The hosts keep their heads after that discard and quickly rush through Nunez, who puts his left foot in the middle for Salah to push past the stranded Pickford.

A great minute in this game.

That’s about as close as either side has come so far.
