NBA All-Star Game format explained
The 2023 NBA All-Star Game will have the same competitive format as the last two NBA All-Star Games, a dynamic where every quarter counts.
- The two all-star teams compete to win each quarter for their respective charities.
- Each charity starts the game with a $150,000 donation.
- Each of the first three quarters begins with a score of 0-0 and lasts 12 minutes. The winner of each 12-minute quarter (first, second, and third) is the team that scores the most points within the quarter.
- Each quarter is worth $100,000 to the winning team’s charity.
- If both teams score the same number of points within a quarter, the $100,000 charity donation at stake for that quarter will be split between the two organizations.
- The fourth quarter begins with each team’s total score after the first three quarters on the main scoreboard.
- The fourth quarter is played untimed and teams play to a final target score, meaning the game ends with a basket or free throw thrown instead of the clock running down.
- The final target score is determined by dividing the leading team’s total score by three quarters and adding 24 points – with the 24 representing Kobe Bryant’s jersey number.
- For example, if Team LeBron leads Team Giannis with a score of 100 – 95 after the first three quarters, the final target score is 124 (100 + 24).
- The first team to meet (or exceed) the final target score wins the NBA All-Star Game.
- The team that wins the All-Star Game will receive $150,000 for their chosen charity.
