Return to Monkey Island: How to find the skulls and secret

Finally, about halfway through the game, Guybrush has finally reached Monkey Island – almost. LeChuck’s ship got you close, but you still have to walk the seabed on the final leg of the journey. Thankfully, not only do you have the map of the mystery, but you also have the almost superhuman ability to hold your breath for eight minutes (Guybrush is apparently not in his prime). That’s enough to finally make it to the shore of Monkey Island before he falls into a wet grave.

When you step ashore on the title island, it seems like you have everything you need to simply follow the map straight to the mystery. However, this map isn’t so much a map as a series of clues and steps that will lead you in a roundabout way to the mystery. Here’s how to find all six skulls

Once you reach the mainland after your little walk under the sea, you might be dying to crack the map of mystery and head straight for it. Instead, be patient and spend some time exploring Monkey Island to collect all six skulls first to make your life that much easier. Here’s how to snag them all.

Step 1: The first skull is on the beach just to the left of where you first come out of the sea under a tree.

Step 2: Go right and take the path north to the jungle.

Step 3: Go west to the other beach.

Step 4: In the far left corner, again under some trees, is another skull.

Step 5: Next, head north to the cliffs. The skull is at the bottom left edge.

Step 6: Now go to the shipwreck. This skull lies open in the sand.

Step 7: By the giant monkey head on the east side, you’ll find this skull just outside the makeshift fence.

How to find the secret on Monkey Island

With all of the skulls safely added to your inventory, it’s time to find this secret.

Step 1: Open LeChuck’s treasure map.

Step 2: Find the red berry bush northwest of where you first washed up on Monkey Island.

Step 3: Follow the direction the stone monkey’s hand is leading you.

Step 4: Follow the path by the wooden chicken.

Step 5: Sneak past the bees carefully.

Step 6: Find the X!

Grabbing the shovel and preparing to dig up the mystery doesn’t quite work, however, and it’s up to you to help Guybrush through yet another sticky situation.
