It had only been about a week since the fever flare for the Marvel Cinematic Universe‘s Phase Five was on the verge of boiling over just because of the grim response to it Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania to take the wind out of the sails of the entire Multiverse saga.
Things have gone from bad to worse since then, and now we’re already at a point where the author of both the threequel and Avengers: The Kang Dynasty forced to go on the defensive. These are new territory for the franchise, and they could soon get a lot choppy.
Quantumania falls so hard at the box office that it joins disease And Dark Phoenix Association
Not content to suffer the biggest box office drop in MCU history after falling 70 percent in its second weekend, Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania also stole the record Batman vs Superman for the steepest decline of any comic book adaptation to over $100 million.
In terms of the genre as a whole, regardless of the numbers, Peyton Reed’s third behind-the-camera station occupies the same territory as disease And Dark Phoenixtwo of the worst Marvel movies ever made, something that seemed unfathomable a week and a half ago.
The Kang Dynasty Writer already forced to defend his antagonist
Introducing a character who is supposed to be the most dangerous and deadliest enemy the MCU has ever seen before they fail their mission at the very first hurdle after being overwhelmed by an army of ants isn’t a good look for Kang the Conqueror Quantumania Writer Jeff Loveness has already been put on the defensive.
In response to the backlash over the latest great evil that can be so easily thwarted, the Rick and Morty Alum claimed that he wanted to give him a layer of vulnerability right away, but the lines between that and weakness are very thin.
At three years old, Multiverse Saga’s malaise sets in alarmingly early
Marvel has gone all-in on the Multiverse saga, but reactions to it have been muted Quantumania have done an excellent job of eliminating any palpable sense of anticipation and intrigue for what’s next. Many fans are already tired of multiple timelines and incoming variants, but they have no choice but to either like it or lump it together.
Of course, a wave of acclaimed incoming projects might help turn the tide of dissatisfaction, but it never looks good for target audiences to express their dissatisfaction when the storyline is only just ending Avengers: Secret Wars lands in May 2026.
That’s it for another action week of Marvel news, but check back tomorrow when it all starts again.
