Tony Ferguson Shares Advice On How To Achieve Your Dreams
Tony Ferguson shares some knowledge with the world ahead of his UFC 279 fight.
UFC 279 will now feature a main event between Nate Diaz and Tony Ferguson. This matchup seemingly came out of nowhere after Chimaev’s weight loss rocked the map, but it’s a fight that MMA fans have dreamed of for years.
Ferguson knows quite a bit about dreams himself. He has been a fixture in the UFC lightweight division for many years. He’s a former interim title holder and has been a fight or two away from the title for a number of years.
At 38, Ferguson may be nearing his final years in the sport but has not been disappointed in his path. He started out as a member of The Ultimate Fighter season 13, won the season and has progressed from there.
Ferguson believes that everyone should set goals
Ferguson spoke to the media ahead of his upcoming UFC 279 fight about the goals he set for himself when he was younger and fresher into the sport. He wrote down a box of goals when he was on TUF and was asked if they had all been met.
“Yes, I had to. My coach told me the whole time we first showed up at Grand Valley State — when I was there he called me in, sat us all down and gave us a note card and a pen — this is Coach Dave Mills from Grand Valley – and everyone, listen, I want you to do the same shit. He said: “I would like you to write down three goals that you can achieve in the first few weeks here. The next goal is, I want you to set another goal that you can achieve within six months or a year. And the third goal, I want you to have one, whatever it is – big mansion or whatever, I want you to put that there – whatever is out of reach.
Ferguson has come a long way in the sport of mixed martial arts. He never won that elusive UFC world title, but he proved he’s among the best ever. He has defeated many strong opponents in his time and still strives for more.
Ferguson has not revealed his goals at this point but wants to get out there tonight and show the world he’s a winner.
“And every time you reach a goal, you get closer and closer to that third goal. You would put your (favorite) quote from your favorite athlete, sign it, weight, height, all that good stuff, but what mattered were those three goals. And in the dream box I would do that. I would focus my mindset and energy on what I wanted,” he explained. “I would boom, put that down and put it in the dream box. And over time, this is what happened: the dream box is still there, but I started just leaving it in, leaving it in here, and not letting anyone do that.”
