We’re getting ready for the crossroads between former world champions Brandon Figueroa and Mark Magsayo going head-to-head on March 4th in a 12-round bout for the interim WBC Featherweight title. The fight, plus undercard action, will be televised by Showtime in the US and FiteTV in the UK

Figueroa (23-1-1, 18 KOs) surrendered the WBC and WBO super bantamweight titles to undefeated Stephen Fulton by majority decision in November 2021. The Texan star is excited for a rematch, but that sequel is sure to come at featherweight.

Before Fulton vs Figueroa 2 can happen, however, the 26-year-old pressure fighter will have to face off against Magsayo, who is highly regarded in the industry.

“He’s a good fighter and you can’t ignore him,” Figueroa told The Sporting News. “At 126 he’s dangerous; he trains hard and his hard work [pays off]. I just need to train harder than him and be on my A-game. On Saturday I have to be sharp and make sure he doesn’t hit me with one of his power shots.

“The game plan is to box him a bit and see how he responds to my boxing ability. If that works, I’ll keep boxing. If I’m more effective on the inside, I need to go inside. But Magsayo is a fast, explosive fighter and not only that, he carries his power into the later rounds.”

Magsayo, 27, is the former WBC featherweight champion. The plucky Filipino dethroned then-champion Gary Russell Jr. in January 2022 but lost the title to Mexican Rey Vargas in his first defense.

“I won a big fight, I lost a big fight,” Magsayo (24-1, 16 KOs) told Boxing Junkie. “Now I have another great chance. It’s an honor to fight for it [an interim] World Championship again against Figueroa. This is a great fight.”

“I’m hungrier now. I walk away with a loss. I have to come back stronger to prove to them that I’m an elite fighter, that I’m still a champion. I’ll get the belt back.”

The winner of this fight positions themselves for a world title fight against the aforementioned Vargas. It’s a long way back for the loser.
