Carabao Cup final LIVE: Manchester United vs Newcastle latest score updates as Marcus Rashford shot beats Loris Karius
Newcastle a very good side – Ten Hag
Manchester United and Newcastle battle it out for the first domestic title of the 2022/23 season in the Carabao Cup final at Wembley Stadium this afternoon.
Both teams are aiming to end the trophy drought as United have gone six years without getting their hands on silverware – a previously unthinkable feat during the Sir Alex Ferguson era. Newcastle’s wait for a trophy is considerably longer. They have not won one for 54 years, since the European Fairs Cup in 1969, and they have not won a domestic cup since 1955 – a full 68 years ago.
It will also be a first silverware for the manager who prevails. Erik ten Hag and Eddie Howe are both aiming for their first trophies since managing United and Newcastle respectively and a win at Wembley will be ample reward for having positively changed the direction both clubs appear to have been taking.
Optimism runs high in both fan bases as thousands of Newcastle supporters are already flocking to the capital. Howe’s side are bolstered by the return of Bruno Guimaraes but goalkeeper Nick Pope will be a huge miss as Loris Karius comes on in his biggest game since the 2018 Champions League final.
