England’s incredible Euros victory voted most impactful women’s sporting moment of the last five years
The emphatic victory of the lionesses at the EM 2022 against Germany was voted the most formative female sporting moment of the last five years, according to a study.
England’s women sent the Germans to a stunning 2-1 home win at Wembley on 31 July.
Cheering scenes erupted across the country as the Lionesses gave the men a lesson on how to bring football home.
And their incredible performances were shown as the ladies garnered nearly a third of the 2,000 votes in the poll.
The study also revealed that, according to parents surveyed, 40 percent of children watched this year’s Euro final.
And a whopping 82 percent said the win inspired their child to play sports.
Similarly, 26 percent of all adults have taken up a new sport in the last five years – with soccer, swimming and tennis being among the most popular.
And seven out of 10 admitted they were inspired by notable female sporting moments to start something new.
Overall, 57 percent of those surveyed by OnePoll believe that women’s sporting moments have inspired the next generation to play sports over the past five years.
But 43 percent admitted they would like to attend more sporting events in the future if they could save money on travel to facilities.
Tennis star Emma Raducanu MBE’s dramatic win at the 2021 US Open was second and Chloe Kelly’s powerful goal celebration at the Women’s Euros was third.
Rachel Blackmore, who won the Grand National, and Dame Laura Kenny, who won gold at the 2022 Commonwealth Games, also made it into the running.
Also popular was Fallon Sherrock, who became the first woman to defeat a man at the 2019 PDC World Championships in darts.
And American Simone Biles, who became the most decorated gymnast that same year, also ranked high.
Lionesses star and Euro 2022 Golden Boot winner Beth Mead said: “It has been an incredible experience with England to have the nation’s support on our way to winning Euro 2022.
“It gave the squad a huge boost to play in front of a record crowd of over 87,000 fans at Wembley Stadium and knowing that millions more were watching from home.”
OnePoll’s study of 2,000 adults was commissioned by Trainline, which is offering £10 off-rail travel to fans traveling to women’s games by train to encourage more fans to attend games.
